Wedding Dress Shopping Mistakes to Avoid

Now that you're engaged, it's time to begin shopping for the perfect wedding dress (if you haven't already!). However, before you dive in head first, you should be aware of some of the most common mistakes brides-to-be make when shopping for their wedding dresses - so that you can avoid the pitfalls.

Getting Stuck on One Idea

Many women already have their ideal dress in mind before they even begin shopping. However, this may make it difficult to find a dress if nothing in the shop measures up to what you have in your imagination. It's great to have some general ideas, but be prepared to be flexible. Just because you have your heart set on a strapless dress doesn't mean that you shouldn't try on any other styles. You never know when you might find the perfect dress, so be open-minded.

Bringing the Wrong Friends or Family Members

It's great to bring your friends or your mum along to offer their opinions, but make sure that they will be constructive and honest. The salespeople in the store are likely to ooh and aah over everything you put on, so you'll want someone there who will give it to you straight. Don't bring too many people though, or you may just end up confused by too many conflicting opinions. Bring a select few who you really trust to help.

Buying the Wrong Size

This is one of the most common traps that brides-to-be fall into. Rather than buying the size that fits, they buy a size too small under the assumption that they will lose weight and get in better shape by the time the wedding rolls around. However, this is never a good idea; weddings already have enough stress surrounding them, so you don't want to put any added pressure on yourself. Buy a dress that fits you properly. You can always have it taken in a bit by a professional tailor if you do lose a bit of weight.

Spending Too Much Money

A wedding gown is something that you will hopefully only wear once in your lifetime, so it's ok to spend a bit extra for something that is truly special. However, there's no need to go completely overboard. You could live to regret it if you spend enough to buy a car, especially since you will only wear your wedding dress once. At White Gown, you can save a lot of money by purchasing a gently-used gown, or you can gain back some of the money you spent by selling your dress so that someone else can enjoy it as much as you did.
